I've been hearing an increased number of reports of Christian fundamentalists going against the gay community, further pushing their agenda to have gay rights pulled. And as a result, there have been a number of clashes between the two groups.
As an Atheist, I find this appalling.
And this is unbecoming of Christians. Most Christians I know understand why it's best to live and let live free... but alas... fundamentalists of any group are a headache to deal with.
I must urge my fellow Atheists and Agnostics to take a stand, and any like minded of other groups. We cannot allow these religious fundamentalists the right to dictate who is or is not entitled to the rights they enjoy.
I know, as Atheists, I cannot make you do anything. Your morals are made by you and you alone. And for this, we are destined to continue disagreeing with each other... but I must urge you... take a stand on this issue. Not for them, FOR US!
If we allow the fundamentalists the ability to act as an authority over who can and cannot marry, or many other rights they are pushing at lately... then we're next. As are all the other religions out there. Once these fascist ideals are pushed through and the gays are stripped of their rights, we're next in line.
We don't hold to a religion. Sure, you can fake it... but I feel that would be against my morals of honesty, as you likely feel the same.
I want the right to be allowed to marry just as much as any gay or lesbian... for the moment we Atheists have that right. But we don't belong to any religious organization, we are not represented as a religion, and as such, our right to marry is also dictated to us by these fundamentalists should their lobbying succeed.
This is fascism guys and gals, make no mistake about it. A group of people are pushing their personal ideals on us.
Don't make enemies of the religions, there are those in the religious groups who still stand with us on this... but there are unfortunately a much greater number of those who desire to push their concept of morality on us without an ounce of consideration for our rights or freedom to chose.
And I for one, will not tolerate fascism.
To the gays and lesbians out there, I may not be one of you... but I'm most definitely with you.
